Last week our family also had our first “tramping” (hiking) experience here in NZ. Wellington is surrounded by Bush. We went for a hike and saw amazing vegetation, including very unusual trees and bushes.
This one is called a “Fierce Lancewood “ because it has spikey leaves. This photo is of immature trees. When is grows to maturity it looks like a regular tree. When people first tried to classify the tree they thought it was two different species at its different stages of maturity.
We saw an 800 year old Rimu tree with it’s own “guardian” (my term for the carving).
We saw huge ferns—small fern plants, large silver fern bushes, and huge black fern trees.
