"Statues"

Claudine and I like to walk a lot around Island Bay and have come across some interesting discoveries.

This first carving is on the "Path of Our Ancestors" marking the spot where the native people once had a fortified dwelling overlooking the bay.

This stone carving is our most recent find in the hills up above our house.  Though unmarked, Google came through and I found out it is a monument to Te Rauparaha.

From Wikipedia: "Te Rauparaha (1760s-1849) was a Māori rangatira (chief) and war leader of the Ngāti Toa tribe who took a leading part in the Musket Wars. He was influential in the original sale of conquered Rangitane land to the New Zealand Company and was a participant in the Wairau Incident in Marlborough. He was known as the Napoleon of the South Pacific."

These carvings are above someone's garage along the southern coast.

These figurines decorate someone's mailbox, also on the southern coast.
